More than any other question, clients always ask what they should wear to their session. Coordinating your outfits can seem like a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be! Here are some tips to help guide you.
Complementary colors are your friend!
The days of everyone dressing the same for a family photo are gone! Instead choose colors that generally complement each other. Pick a color scheme and go from there. See the photos below for some general outfit inspiration.
Start with one person.
Sometimes if you're stuck starting with one person's outfit will help guide you. If someone in the family has a favorite outfit they really want to wear go with it and dress the rest of the crew in outfits that compliment the first person.
Remember to factor in the weather.
Let's face it, we live in Minnesota and sometimes the weather is a bit unpredictable. If you're planning an outdoor session layers are always a good way to go. A perfect outfit is one that you feel comfortable in. If you're uncomfortable it will show in the photos. For Fall/Winter sessions don't forget to think about coats, hats, scarves and gloves.
Don't forget the shoes!
Shoes can make or break an outfit. Sandals, dress shoes, and Converse (or similar) are a great choice for warmer months, while boots are a great choice for the cooler months. Try to avoid neon colored, or character athletic shoes if you can help it. Sometimes going barefoot can be a good option, just bring walking shoes to get where we need to go.
Try on your clothes in advance!
This is a really important often overlooked piece of the puzzle. Look at yourself in the mirror from all angles. Make sure you can sit, squat, and lean forward comfortably. For the kiddos, make sure they can run, jump, play, etc.
Patterns
Patterns and prints can work great in moderation. If you're going to go this route, try one statement piece (floral or patterned dress for example) and then keep the rest of the family more subtle in complimentary colors. Moderation is key in this equation, I can't stress that enough!
This is meant to be a general guide to help with clothing selection. Pinterest can also be a great source to get some inspiration.
